Hello Friends,
Welcome back to these parts which haven’t seen the light of day for what I must admit has been far too long. I could offer a number of excuses as to why I’ve neglected my blog for so long, but lets face it, I think they can be summed up in one little word: life. Life tends to get in the way at the best of times, but combine that with a pandemic and adjusting to a whole new routine really gave disorientation a whole new meaning.
But that’s not to say it’s all been doom and gloom in these neck of the woods… in fact, a lot has happened this year which I am very grateful for. There were numerous sparks of light in moments of darkness which have kept us all going this year and here we are, on the brink of 2021 with a new glimmer of hope.
In the chaos of the ups and downs of 2020, one of the things which kept me going were the small wins. With most of my big plans and ambitious hopes for the year derailed, it was these little wins which never failed to bring out the silver linings. I spent more time with my family and loved ones, focused on my hobbies, interests and self development, and most of all started to prioritise my health and well-being.
In truth, the biggest lesson I’ve learnt from all the curveballs this year has thrown at us is that what’s meant to be will be. There are moments that propel us forward like a slingshot, and others which stop us dead in our tracks leaving us more than a little breathless. I’m sure we’ve all had those in abundance this year. There were moments which ignited my insides like fireworks and moments which made me feel hollow, an acute reminder of how vulnerable humanity really is; not invincible or indestructible, just human.
It taught me that there is no period of our lives where change will be a walk in the park. It’s hard and ruthless but can also be beautiful if we know where to look. Every few steps you can trip on a uneven ground, stub your toes and fall, but that’s okay because each time you’ll find that you can pick yourself up and carry on, stronger and wiser than before.
Tempting though it was to bubble-wrap myself against the world at times, it is near enough impossible to protect oneself from fear or pain, without also protecting oneself from happiness. Doing so made me realise that I could be missing out on all the great things just because they might be difficult to achieve; that is how I feel about this year and all that came with it.
As cheesy as it sounds, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Let me tell you that each time the rug is yanked out from under you, you’ll rise from the ground faster and faster until you leap over that rug altogether.
If like me you’re feeling a little dizzy from the rollercoaster that this year has been, I’d suggest you take a nice long walk, grab your favourite drink and do whatever makes you happy. It’s more important now than ever to look after our own well-being and health.
I’ll be back with more musings soon, but in the mean time look out for those small wins, hug your families and loved ones a little closer… better days will come.
Love,
Nimra
